David Liebman

These solo endeavors feature myself playing all the instruments. “Memories, Dreams and Reflections” highlights the compositions, most of which are quite programmatic. The Carl Jung book by this name was very influential on me at that time, encouraging a lot of introspective thinking. “Picture Show” consists of improvisations based on a specific idiom or texture. The challenge of recording solo is obvious; how to balance one’s individual talents and aesthetic values into a musical statement.

Memories, Dreams and Reflections features David Liebman by himself in a very personal approach making use of overdubbing techniques. In addition to his soprano sax and flute, he employs piano, electric piano, synthesizer, drums, bells, and his voice here.

Recorded in late 1981 and mid-1982, Liebman meanders through the real and the abstract, the pretty and the ugly, the peaceful and the agitated. An image-creating soloist, Liebman paints his sound pictures in layered textures.
Will Smith, Sunday World-Herald

What David’s solo project reveals is a broad humanistic vision, a wealth of musical talent, an amazing mastery over a battery of instruments (soprano saxophone, flutes, keyboards and drums) and a rich repertory of experiences including associations with such giants as Miles Davis and Elvin Jones.

In intensely personal tracks, Liebman deploys his vast musical resources to point to extra-musical sources. “Hiroshima Memorial,” for instance, was inspired by an early morning visit to the landmark and is in memory of “Hiroshima and its victims, with a fervent hope that nuclear energy will never be used in such a destructive manner again.”

As significant work by a significant artist, Memories, Dreams and Reflections promises to stand as a cultural and artistic landmark of American music in the 1980s. Galvanizing.
Chuck Berg, Lawrence Journal-World

Liebman has the ability to touch the soul, eking from the wayward straight horn an extraordinary depth of emotion and dramatic range. His cantabile (singing) style, as identifiable as a human voice in its emotional tone and dramatic role-playing, may, in a given solo, conjure up anguish, ecstasy, anger, fear, hilarity, or haughtiness. Liebman’s music is storytelling of a very high order: form, content, accent, color, and mood are all in place, on cue.
Fred Bouchard, down beat

"It takes an artist to pull off this kind of bold experiment and Liebman lives up to that role."
All About Jazz, November 2005
